Qaurk cam studio

How to add jargon on qaurk

Overall audience feedback

Tony Scattergood:
I think the final designs are really good especially the frontcover as it follows all the forms and convention of a music magazine. I think that it has imitated a indie pop magazine really well and has used alot of iconic themes through the magazine. I also like how you have followed the house style throughout the magazine and only used three colours and three fonts through out. I am also very impressed with the qaulity of most of the pictures taken, but I think the big contents photo would of been better if it was a group picture as theirs quite abit of empty space around that picture. I really that you chose the wright idea from the ones done but i like how you have developed it to add more tag lines and information. The only downside of your magazine is that the whole thing is quite basic and could have abit more added information and possibly one or two more pictures. You could of also added some advertisement or possibly a competition. But overall i think that it is a good project and easy to see how its been progressed.

Aidan Bintcliffe:
I like how the project is easy to see how you've developed it from scratch and it is easy to see how you've done lots of research before creating your magazine. It is also easy to see how by doing that you have been able to create a magazine that is very similiar to real thing and i think it could be easily be turned into a real magazine. I also think that you have made your magazine so it attracts its target audience as you can see that all the people in the magazine look like they could be in indie bands. I would say that the main weakness of the magazine is that it isn't very bright so would make it harder to catch peoples eyes when on a shelf, This is mainly due to none of the colours used are very bright. I do like how the magazine has kept to a house style all the way through, this helps to make all the pages look from the same magazine like they should.

Joe Birch:
I think that the blog is really good and you have spent alot of time on it. I would say that your final front cover, contents and double page spread are defiantly the best things about the blog but its good to see how its been developed it over the course of the year. The pictures that you've taken are really good qaulity and your editing skills are shown really well. The downside of your blog is some of your ideas wern't very detailed so you didn't have much choice. But you defiantly chose the wright one and have edited and added information to make it look the best it could.

Final Evaluation

Media Review
My magazine follows the typical forms and conventions of an indie pop magazine. My magazine has been designed to be sold to a mainstream market. My magazine could be compared to a NME or Q magazine as it is very similar in the way that it follows a house style all the way through the magazine. It does this by keeping to just two fonts all the way through the magazine and three different colours this helps to make the magazine keep one theme and so when anyone sees it they know it’s the NOISE magazine. I used the magazines Q and NME to gain ideas as they were very similar to magazine I was trying to create. I got the idea for the front cover picture from a lot of different magazines but especially from a copy of an NME magazine with the Enemy on the front cover.

My magazine represents the social group of indie very well as everyone in it is shown in indie type clothes they are also posed in that sort of style for example none of them are smiling which is typical of an indie magazine as there is a stereotype that indie kids don’t smile. They also come across as if their not posing because the whole indie scene is about being cool and over the top posing is more for pop magazines. I have also done this by showing on my double page spread my participant on the drums which is a main part of an indie band. All the band names in the magazine are indie bands which help give the impression that this is a well established indie magazine. I also made sure all participants used a direct gaze to draw people into the magazine which is very common for magazines. I also kept to stereotypes by having a bit about a tour which all the indie magazine companies have. I have also encoded into the magazine with the pictures a ideal self and ideal partner for both sexes due to I have used a mix gender production team. I have also encoded into the magazine a message that all the information is exclusive to the magazine so will get people to want to here the latest. I have also done this by using words such as PLUS which give the filling that the magazine is full of information. I have also encoded this by on the contents and double page spread making it look like all the space has been used so they think the magazine is completely full of information.

My magazine would be marketed by a big conglomerate either Bauer or IPC due to they mainly market mainstream magazines which sell a lot of copies and this magazine is very mainstream and would appeal to a broad audience. Where as an independent company would want something that was a lot more niche. They also wouldn’t have the power within the magazine industry to get the magazine to the wider audiences that a conglomerate could such as Bauer or IPC. Another reason I think that it would be best suited with a conglomerate due to they already have magazines such as NME and Q what are very similar so would be most likely to distribute the magazine. I think the circulation would be very big for this magazine as it would appeal to a large audience and I think it because it’s a mainstream magazine it would fit well into the market with the magazines already available but would give them a new alternative. I think this magazine would be promoted on the internet especially social networking sites like facebook and myspace as they have millions of people who are at the target age and social groups who go on those sorts of websites so would be the best way of advertising the magazine. Another way of attracting people would be by putting a television advert on during shows like skins which is one of the most popular TV shows for the market I’m trying to reach. I think that my magazine could be like Kerrang as it could easily beset up as a TV channel or on a radio station.
The main target audience for my magazine is predominantly white males aged 15 – 25 who are interested in indie music a stereotype for my magazine is a male who is quite lower middle class who like going to gigs. They would also wear quite tight jeans and messed up hair. Here is a picture of some people who would be most likely to buy this magazine:
I narrowed down my target audience so that I could target in on what their interested in so they want to buy it. I also did this so I could focus on one sort of theme through out the magazine so that it kept to the house style.

My magazine attracted the target in a lot of different ways but one of the main ways was through mode of address because I used a peer to peer mode of address so the target market could relate to the magazine and so they felt it was aimed especially at them. I also used peer to peer mode of address when listing the bands for example instead of Artic Monkeys I just put the Artics so it fit in with what they would say to their friends. I also attracted them by using words such as exclusive and Plus to make them feel that the magazine is full of information and is a good buy, it also tells them that this information can’t be found anywhere else and if their best bands are in it then they will want top read the magazine in detail. I also attracted them using the pictures as I’ve got the participants to use direct gaze and draw the audience in. I have also got people who could be ideal self or ideal partners to attract both sexes to the magazine. I have designed the masthead so that it stands out against the black background. I have only used three colours and one font so that it was easy to create a house style and so when i made future copies of the magazine people would always know that it was THE NOISE magazine. I chose THE NOISE for the title for the magazine as Noise conotes loud sound and parties which releates with my target audience of 16 - 25 year olds.

I have learnt a lot whilst doing this project especially how to use adobe Photoshop and quark these programmes have helped me do lots of different things from editing pictures and fonts too putting effects on pages. I have also used the technology of the web blogger to upload all my work onto it and arrange it so it is easily accessible. I would say my strengths have been able to edit pictures and fonts. My main weakness was being able to organise the blog and I had problems uploading information.

I have a lot of knowledge of new programmes and new technology as they are very useful to editing and arranging pictures and editing. It is very important that I did a prelim task so that got the hang of using Photoshop and quark and also helped get the hang of creating a magazine and copying the forms and conventions. I also did a lot of drafts to make creating the magazine a lot easier because the more ideas I had the easier it was to take bits from each and create an overall good product. It also helped that I had verbal feedback off a range of different people who gave me their opinions on what was good and what didn’t work. Which helped to the overall product.

Production team:
Ben Fisher

David Fisher
Sam Bradley
Louise Bulcroft
Dale Furness

I have created a mainstream indie magazine very similar to an NME type magazine. The target audience for my magazine is 15 – 25 year olds who are interested in mainstream indie and indie pop bands such as the killers and kings of leon. The expected gender percentages will be 60% male to 40% female. For my picture on the front cover I am going to get Joe and Sam to pose very casually with straight faces as in indie magazines they hardly ever smile I will have them looking at the camera I will position them so the most iconic one is slightly forward. For the contents photographs I am going to have two separate photos one of David and one of Louise in various poses the pictures will be either close ups or medium close ups. For the double page spread I will be using a photo of Dale on the drums as if they were in a recording studio. I have done a lot of research into magazines and had a look at good and bad points of different magazines. I mainly looked into the mainstream magazines and especially NME and Q magazine as they are very similar to the magazine that I will be creating. I will only have to write one article and that’s for my double page spread and for that article I am going to base it on a new band that are realising their debut single to the public. I am For health and safety precautions I will be taking photographs in the room M236 so if there was an emergency evacuation because of a fire I would get everyone to assemble on the Front Football Pitch, If there was someone who got injured I would go and get the nearest first aider Vicky Rowntree in M138 or one of the Sports Staff in SD3.

IPC and Bauer

IPC and Bauer

Bauer and IPC are the two best selling Publishing Groups which have published magazines all over the world. But for both companies who own a lot of different types of magazine their best selling genre is the music magazines. The music magazines on the market owned by Bauer and IPC are:

One of Bauer’s best selling magazines is Kerrang which is a weekly music magazine its main sub genre is rock but also appeals to some of the metal market. Kerrang is aimed at 15 – 30 year olds. Kerrang magazine costs £2.20 from most retail shops and can be subscribed to for a £112.20 annual fee. Kerrang sell roughly about 52,000 magazines per issue but the magazines readership is much greater then what actually buy it. For example people may read their friends magazine. Kerrang is a mainstream magazine although it joust to be a lot more niche but over the years as catered more for the mainstream audience as mainstream magazines sell a lot more copies. Kerrang magazine tries to attract its demographic by using popular rock bands on the front cover and by having exclusive information about them. It also gives away free stuff that appeal to their target audience.

Another one of Bauer’s music magazines is MOJO which also has a main sub genre of rock. Although MOJO is aimed at the same sub genre it is aimed at an older target market. A MOJO magazine costs £4.30 from retail shops but can be subscribed to for a year’s subscription for £51.60. MOJO sells on average 81,039 per issue but its circulatory figure is 100,507. MOJO is a mainstream magazine.

An IPC music magazine that sells really well is Uncut which main sub genre is rock. It is mainly aimed at a older audience you can tell this by the artists that are shown in it and the advertisements that are included. It is easy to see that it is its average circulation is 87,069 but only sells 73,703. The magazine cost £4.40 per issue with annual subscription costing £51.60.

The double page spread was very busy with things going on because having big headlines and big pictures covers up a lot of the page so not as much information is needed to be wrote about making the magazine easy to make. The heading “Kasabian” is really bold and big so it is really obvious what the page is going to be about and so if you like Kasabian you will want to read on. They also use house style on this page like the rest of the magazine so you know when you see that page anywhere you know its NME magazine straight away. They have done this by keeping to the same colours and text. The big picture of Kasabian has been taken as if they don’t know its being taken to give the impression that you might just see them on a random street when in fact they will of set it up like that. Before the text there is a paragraph that tries to draw readers in as it talks about a psychedelic trip which would make readers want to know more information getting them to read on. The whole page setup is very simple but in style that young people would be in to as that’s what the magazine is mainly aimed at.

contents analysis

The contents page is quite basic because it is usually the first page looked at when the magazine is opened so they want it to be clear and easy to see what’s inside the magazine. It has made all the headings really clear by putting coloured boxes around them and having bigger fonts so you know what is in each section. They have also used when talking about what’s on each page they have bold one or two words so people are intrigued to find out more for example “ROCK STAR FITNESS” which alone doesn’t give the reader much information so they put underneath a bit more information so making the reader already start to read it. They have also used capitals on all headings and subheadings to make them stand out drawing the readers eye to them. They have only used one type of text and only a few colours because Q magazine try to keep to their house style as much as possible so all the magazine looks like it goes together. They have put a big picture of the Courteeners on the contents because they are still trying to get people to buy it and by having a band like the Courteeners in a big picture who are a lot of peoples idealself and ideal partner will get a lot more people interested.

Magazine analyse

The front cover of the NME magazine that I’m analysing does a lot to draw customers to the magazine. The most obvious thing is the bright colours used as these will draw a customers attention to the magazine instead of the other ones as their will be so many on the racks. The colours red, yellow and white are really the only colours used this is so the customers straight away know which magazine is NME. This is also done by all the writing also being in the same font by using similar colours and fonts it creates the house style so all NME magazines will look similar so customers will know its an NME magazine straight away. The writing is all in short sentences and bold so its easy for the customers to know straight away what’s inside the magazine they are helped by the magazine using a lot of banners so the writing stands out. This particular magazine uses teacher to pupil mode of address as it is telling you what realises you should only be interested in.

The main picture used of the two men from the band Kasabian has used anchorage with the line “WE’VE BEEN ON A PSYCHEDELIC TRIP” so when the customer looks at that line and the picture it makes them have a know why they are giving a certain look. The main picture also shows them as being quite fashionable creating a lot of readers idealself or ideal partner or a lot of people. In most of the pictures the people are using direct gaze to draw the customers in and give them a feeling that they are looking at them.

The magazine has also used a lot of words to draw the readers to the magazine as its uses words such as exclusive to get customers attention as it is saying that this is going to be the only magazine with their interviews in and has it has a lot of the common favourite bands of the readers of the magazine it will get a lot of customers to buy it. They have also used the word plus to show that as well as all that stuff we’ve managed to get in this as well this shows that the magazine is full of information.
